The Rules of Healthy Eating

If you follow these basic rules then you should be well on your way to eating a well-rounded healthy diet. Additionally, just for clarity, check what you should be avoiding.

  • Cook from fresh whole unprocessed ingredients that are largely in their original form.
  • Have a complex carbohydrate, a lean protein and two or three portions or fresh salad, veggies or fruit with each meal.
  • Include a small amount of good fats in your diet every day.
  • Drink water, fruit or herbal teas or watered down juice.
  • Know what portion size is right for you and eat regulary.
  • Eat a variety of different healthy foods.
  • Read the labels and understand what they mean.

What to avoid

  • Fatty cuts of meat.
  • Other foods high in fat (particularly bad fats).
  • Processed or refined food.
  • Foods with added sugar, salt and artificial colours, flavourings or preservatives.
  • Artificial sweeteners.
  • Takeaways and fast food.
  • Microwave/ready meals.
  • Fried food (occasional frying in olive oil is ok).
  • Burned food.
  • Alcohol and caffeine.
  • Keeping unhealthy snacks in the house.
