The Essential Basics of Healthy Eating

We are all bombarded by a huge amount of information on what is good for you and what is bad for you with much of it giving conflicting views. Eating healthily can seem complex but what many people do not realise is that just following a few basic principals will make the biggest difference and take you 90% of the way towards eating healthily.

Much of the information that is thrown around is about fine tuning the other 10% (or just selling you something you do not need). For example, eating a large round of bacon sarnies with a cholesterol reducing margerine on your bread washed down with a couple of pints of beer will not dramatically cut your risk of heart disease, and a low-fat labelled yoghurt that secretly contains a ton of sugar will not help you lose weight. Equally, special keep-you-slim cereal with full fat milk and sugar on top is nearly a complete waste of time. Get the basics right and you most likely will not need cholesterol reducing margerine, sugary low-fat food or special cereal.

Balanced meals

We all hear about getting enough vitamins and minerals, and this is very important, but just as important is getting the right balance of macronutrients. Macronutrients are the major nutrients that are used to repair our body and give us energy. The three macronutrients are Carbohydrates, Proteins, and Fats. Eating the right sources of these macronutrients will provide you with many (but not all) of the vitamins and minerals you need anyway.
